Some of what food means, not just what it is....

I work for and with Seniors.

Not just any group of Seniors, mind you, these people are priceless.

They have crossed oceans to come to America to live free, often times leaving behind wealth. You see, they had to choose, freedom or money. It seems wealth does not come to America from other countries.

Some are healthier than others, and some are happier than others. Some might be jokers and love to talk, others are still learning to speak American English.

Others have fought in our wars to defend America and the countries of now years later, their new neighbor.

Many still dress up in their Sunday best to go out to shop for food or basic needs. They are proud to live in a country where they can choose for themselves and do so in peace.

And they bring me food.

I must say right here and now, I don't need them to bring me food. I am paid in full for my time spent at work. And, I am completely capable of purchasing my own food.

And I know that the food is not brought because I am hungry (actually far from it!) Instead........

Food is a gift, given to show care and respect.

fresh fruit, often times oranges

Food is contentment, hunger is frightening. Therefore enough food is one of the the symbols of a happy life.

Food offered to others, shows a generous spirit and a willingness to share.

Food shared around the table, is how we continue to be a family.

I never had any reservations about my Sunday dinners each month.

But if I ever did, these fine folks would be the best examples in support of,
setting your table,
and sitting together,
while sharing a meal,
to continue being family.

As always, thank you for taking a moment to stop and say hello. I appreciate your time and your wonderful comments.

What a lovely post! It really made me smile, thinking of those lovely folks and how much they must value you. Food really is the most wonderful, thoughtful gift.

I love this post, very sweet! My dad worked in a nursing home for many years and I remember going with him to help, the people were great and I loved spending time listening to the stories and spending time with the residents. I love receiving food, it really is the best gift!

Such a lovely post! My husband really has a heart for seniors and often volunteers to help seniors from our church around the yard and to fix things around the house. They often thank him in food. Food from their gardens or baked goods. He is always touched by the gifts.
