What we ARE NOT eating, Wednesday - Deviled Onions

It is time to get serious about What we ARE NOT eating Wednesday, because some serious thank you's are in order.

On my stoop when I got home Monday was a package. It looked unassuming and ordinary, but as it turns out, looks are very deceiving! My blogger friend Holly had said she had a little something to send my way, and she thought I would enjoy it.

I really need to point out that this is not the first time Miss Holly has sent something my way, as you may recall. Apparently Miss Holly is just a sending something your way, kind of gal. You really must respect that in a friend!

Melynda,
You know I say this with
the utmost love & respect,
"when I think of gross food, I think of you"
Enjoy!
Holly

It is not enough that she is kind and generous, she also makes stuff. She crafted this lovely greeting card and sweet personalized address book.
And everything was tied up with the cutest red and white cotton twine. Inside the package were two remarkable books on regrettable food. I don't know about you, but that term is perfect!

The Gallery of Regrettable Food.
and
Gastroanomalies.
This book focuses on food photographs, and some are quite unappetizing, as shown below.

I thought about not making this, but it seemed a bit complicated.

Yes, sorry that does say Horsey Road-Apple Heap, see what I mean about those photos!

And then I remembered Honey's love of catsup. As you can see from the bottle shown we do buy it in the large size. So tonight we are not going to make.......

Deviled Onions
not cooked from:  The Gallery of Regrettable Foods
originally from:  Heinz Tomato Ketchup

4 large or 8 small onions
1/3 c Heinz Tomato Ketchup Company
1/3 c water
1 T butter or Margarine, melted
1/4 t salt
few grains pepper

Place onions in a skillet, add remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until tender. Time will vary depending upon size of onions used.

Serves 4

And now lets wander shall we?

For the past few days, Honey and I have watched the A&E series Horatio Hornblower, with so much ocean in sight for days and days, don't be surprised at the following links.

Elisabeth always has a delicious fish dish she is cooking up. Warning, this one has scotch bonnet sauce.

You too can play the What we ARE NOT eating, Wednesday game. It only takes a recipe from one of your books or magazines, you know something you know the family would not ask for.

As always thank you for taking a moment to stop and say hello.
I appreciate your time and your comments.

Key words: Wednesday, thank you, fish

Those are some lovely gifts.. and I love her little note! Holly is really talented, and so thoughtful! Looks like your library has gone a little bigger with 'regrettable food', yes, it sounds perfect! :)
The deviled onions does not sound too bad, it does not sound delicious, but not too bad either, perhaps it needs some herbs like oregano or rosemary?
Thank you for the link, Melynda, I should 'copy you" and do a rewind on that! You make me smile, thinking about your earlier "rewind" post, as this dish of mine has only one reader when I posted that exactly a year ago! Thank you for your lovely shout-out! Sending hugs over! :)

Melynda, the deviled onions actually made my stomach turn a bit, lol. I'm sitting here drinking my coffee and......I don't know. I love onions and I even love ketchup but something about the combo. I know I can always rely on you on Wednesdays for stomach-turning food! :o) And what a PERECT gift for you!

What a wonderful surprise to find on your door step. I love your books and have to agree with you about the deviled onions. I'm relatively new to your blog and don't often comment. I just wanted you to know how much I enjoy the food and recipes you share with your readers. I always enjoy my visit and you keep me coming back. Blessings...Mary

You're welcome, Puddin Cakes! So glad you could make use of them. When I saw them, I just knew they had to go to your house to live.

This recipe is really pretty good, just a little boring. I'm posting Vidallia Onions Baked in Tomato Juice and Molasses tomorrow. Now that is really good.

I suppose it had to happen sometime. The recipe doesn't sound bad at all to me. I have a recipe I got from MerryMac's Tea Room in Atlanta, many years ago--Baked Vidalia Onions. It uses tomato juice, butter, and honey. They are delicious and I love serving them for supper, on a cool and rainy spring evening with an omelet.

I'd love to see those books!

And once again, my dear, thanks for the link.

ohmygoodness! I can see why you won't be eating that today! That was really sweet of your friend to send you the books. You should be able to find all sorts of stuff to not eat in them. :)

Have a great Wednesday! Thanks for stopping by to see me.

How sweet of Holly.
I think I have a few REALLY old cookbooks from the 1930's that I should revisit again as I'm sure you would be able to use some of these recipes in this Wednesday posting. I am so beholden for your gracious features of my blog posts. At least they are on the what I WOULD eat list and not the WON'T eat list.LOL.

What interesting books! I don't think the onions are so bad - I bet they would be good on or in meatloaf and on a hamburger. I've done a similar thing using barbecue sauce before.
