What we ARE NOT eating, Wednesday, and a bit of wandering

Yes it is time for another delicious jelled salad. No we won't be eating this, and honestly if the weather was warm, hot even, we would not be eating this. Bologna, lemon jello and tomato juice do not seem like a friendly trio.

Jellied Meat Ring
not cooked from:

Good food for hard times.

1 1/2 pounds small bologna, cut 1/8 inch thick
1 package lemon flavored gelatin
1 c hot water
1 c tomato juice
1 t salt
1/2 t sugar
1 T onion juice
1/2 c chopped cabbage
1/4 c diced celery
1/2 c chopped carrots

Mayonnaise for garnish

Cut bologna and set aside. Dissolve gelatin in water. Add tomato juice, salt, sugar and onion juice. Cover the bottow of an 8 inch ring mold with half of the gelatin mixture. Chill in the refrigerator until it becomes firm. Arrange slices of bologna on the gelatin so they overlap slightly. When remainder of the gelatin thickens, min in vegetables and pour over bologna. Chill until firm. Unmold on large chop plate. Arrange remaining bologna slices in a fan shape circle around the salad and serve with mayonnaise.

Yield 10 servings

Now that we have finished that, lets do some wandering.....so many good things!

Good Morning Melynda Sweetie...
I have to tell you, I don't think I could even taste this one. Bologna and lemon jello and tomatoe juice somehow just do not catch my pallet. An odd one for sure.

Thank you for the links as I do see a couple that caught my eye. As always, such a pleasure to pop in and start my day.

Have a great one sweetie. Country hugs and much love, Sherry

You know me...I'd have to try it if it showed up at a potluck. But I don't think I'd ever make it myself.

Oh, when will it stop??? What were these people thinking? I shall use my favorite word from my high school days, "GRODY!"

Oh my goodness, some of the jellied salads from back in the day really were something! That is quite a combination of ingredients!

Thank you so much for the shout out and the link!

Yes, jellied and meat in the same name sounds repulsive! I think the other recipes listed would appeal to me more. :)

Thanks for another entertaining "wouldn't eat it" post. I was reading a recipe for pickled pigs feet the other day and it made me think of the Wednesday posts :)
Thanks for linking my stromboli. I'm off to check out some of the other links you shared. Have a good one!

I like to read cookbooks but I'm not sure I would want to even read that recipe. Cute post.

That's wild. I've never seen anything like that. And if I have, I've blocked it out.

Melynda-You are so unique with "what we are not eating"...not have seen anything like this on any food blogs. To think they actually printed these awful recipes in cook books!

Thank you for the mention about my sausage and polenta dish. For a moment I thought it was also the dish we are not eating!
What a relief!

The name says it all, "Jellied Meat Ring". Ugh.

I was planning to join you on this event today, and I had a doozie all planned out, scanned photo and all. Then I got super busy. Maybe next week.

This dish is beyond wonderful! My Mom made something very much like this without adding the bologna to the salad, but next time I'm doing it your way. Try this you will not be sorry.

That wouldn't be on my table either! I could think of better uses for all those ingredients than putting them all together. I'm going to look around some more at the wonderful things you have posted over here. You have a great blog. Have a wonderful weekend! Candace

I have to try the Chorizo Lentil Soup. My kids love Lentil soup, but i make it with smoked pork. It would be a nice change.
